After nearly 100 years of being cramped for space resulting in thousands of acres of wetlands lost in coastal Louisiana, the Mississippi River demonstrated it will get back to its homeland one way or another. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has spent billions containing the river over years rather than practicing reasonable policies like "living with water, building with nature" adopted in the Netherlands. This idea centers around letting rivers expand during flood periods and allowing the nutrients and sediments in starved low lands to be refortified. As a stunned Louisiana awaits another natural disaster, the tons of river sediment and nutrients streaming by challenged levees is just the stuff needed to restore the coast. This irony of ironies says much about a failed system to contain mother nature and the cost it has exacted on Louisiana.
