  • Louisiana Voters Divided Among 217 Political Parties

Louisiana Voters Divided Among 217 Political Parties The Louisiana Secretary of State carefully records the political party voters choose when they register to vote, which is how Louisiana's voter roll came to include 217 political parties, 86 which have only one member.  Included in that list is the Bull Moose Party, with its five members, 12 Jedis, 20  members of the Banana Party, one Monarchist, 16 Whigs, two Cajuns and a list of equally amusing party choices.  Read Gannett's Mike Hasten's hilarious account of those who list their party registration as "other" at the link below.

Frustration over budget cuts to Louisiana's universities finally turned violent yesterday when UNO students attempted to storm Chancellor Tim Ryan's office to protest cuts to the university.  Almost 200 students were confronted by campus police who attempted to block the entrance to the administration building in a clash that ended with the university police chief going to the hospital.  The school has seen its budget slashed, faculty laid off and services cut as state legislators look to close a massive hole.

This very brief summary of the event leaves out a few vital pieces of information.
The intent of the students was to pass through the administration building as part of their march in a peaceful movement.
A "dance party" was planned at the amphitheater directly on the other side of said building from their original rally point, so the route was not meant to be an invasion but rather a show of numbers to the school's administrators.
The large group of students were allowed to enter the administration building (where the Chancellor's office is located) but upon reaching the hall that lead to the exit UNO campus security stepped in to block the rest of the route. This act of opposition is what lead to the confusion and eventual accidental injury of our beloved Cheif Harrington.
It is wonderful that attention is being brought to this issue but accuracy in reporting is also an important part of informing the public. This witness hopes that the show of malcontent that these students displayed will be taken seriously by those that decide our (and our children's) futures.
Louisiana students deserve higher education, in clean, safe settings, and with course options that give them the best advantages on their chosen paths.
