Two of Louisiana's most respected good government groups, the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR) and Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL), are opposing a recommendation backed by Governor Bobby Jindal to consolidate the state higher education management boards. Their biggest objection is that the move would abolish the Louisiana Board of Regents.
The Louisiana Postsecondary Education Review Commission finalized its work early this month and recommended that the LSU, Southern University and University of Louisiana boards merge with the Regents to form a single board for universities. PAR and CABL have issued press releases opposing the plan to abolish the Regents.
The measure would require a two-thirds vote of the legislature and a constitutional amendment passed by voters.
