Louisiana transportation chief William Ankner resigned suddenly on Friday evening amid controversy over a $60 million highway contract that triggered heavy criticism.
Ankner said in an interview earlier this week that he had no plans to change jobs and had just bought a home in Baton Rouge.
But he quit without explanation Friday, and got an 11-word thank you statement from Gov. Bobby Jindal after nearly two years on the job.
