    Speaker of the House Says Jindal, Senate to Blame for Pending Budget Crisis Speaking to the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, Louisiana House Speaker Jim Tucker laid the blame for a 2011 state budget crisis on Governor Bobby Jindal and the Senate, saying next year's looming $2 billion budget shortfall could have been mitigated if they had been willing to make more significant cuts in the current and previous budgets.  Tucker said the state's colleges and universities will be the hardest hit, pointing to the student protests at UNO this week as a by-product of the deep cuts to higher education.

LA Race to the Top Application Singled Out by Washington Post

Louisiana's application for federal funds through the Race to the Top program was singled out in a Washington Post column as an example of how states should seek and apply any awards.

In an op-ed piece published Saturday, Kevin Huffman, Teach for America executive vice president of public affairs, addressed several plans that he viewed as lacking what's necessary to be successful in obtaining an award. But he described Louisiana's plan as "a clear, concise, actionable plan to reform a large swath of its public schools."
